Babe Ruth was so good that his home runs could heal injuries.
Your grandpa might've told you the ol' story about how when Ruth was a member of the New York Yankees in the mid-20s, he promised an injured boy he'd hit a home run for him. Well that young man was 11-year old Johnny Sylvester.
According to legend, Sylvester was on his deathbed after getting kicked in the head by a horse. Ruth and his teammates learned of the incident and sent an autographed baseball to the kid, who was a big Yankees fan.
The Bambino not only signed the ball, but scribed, “I’ll knock a homer for Wednesday’s game” on the side of it. Wednesday's contest just-so-happened to be Game 4 of the 1926 World Series, and Ruth more than delivered on his promise -- he become the first player in World Series history to hit three home runs in a game.
Within days, Sylvester recovered. Even the doctor said the kid’s health began to improve as soon as he'd heard about the Babe's homers.
Grey Flannel Auctions recently put the famous baseball on the auction block, setting a minimum $50,000 bid. There was a ton of interest, and after 17 bids, it sold yesterday for a whopping $250,642!
